The Social Dilemma

Recently in class, we watched The Social Dilemma. I have to start by stating that this was a really well- made documentary and the people that were in this film did a great job of being transparent and dumbing most of the information down to make it more easily understood. For the most part, it seemed that the people that were sharing their thoughts and information had their own experiences with the big-time corporations and companies that are responsible for much of the access to social media we all have at the forefront of our fingertips today. I will be honest in saying that this documentary gave me some kind of fear that I can't explain. Just like you and everyone else, I find myself on social media a lot more than I want to admit. With that being said, I think that everyone that uses social media does so with different purposes. If I'm bored, I'll most likely get on TikTok to hopefully find something funny. If I want to see something specific like a longer video, then...

Update on Stanley Cup Playoffs

After the first week of playoff play, some teams have a really good chance of moving on to the next round and getting closer to playing for the Stanley Cup while others can see their chances becoming slimmer and slimmer each day.  The Carolina Hurricanes are up three games to one on the New York Islanders and are one win away from moving on. They have looked exactly the way the series is looking right now- dominant. Another team that is winning at the same pace as the Hurricanes are the Boston Bruins. I would be lying to you if I said the world is shocked by this, as they set the record for the most wins ever in a season. The underdog Florida Panthers stole game two away from the Bruins but games one, three and four have all been ugly for them. Boston is elite. The Toronto Maple Leafs are up two games to one over the Tampa Bay Lightning. After the game one beat down, the narrative was quickly that Toronto would be out in the minimum four games. They lost game one in disgustin...

Marketing with LinkedIn

LinkedIn is a serious form of social media. It's a much more serious form of social media than say, TikTok. I say this because this platform is essential to people in the workplace and the world's professionals. The book states that 828 million users in over 200 countries use LinkedIn, with almost 200 hundred million coming from the United States. Someone would log on and create a LinkedIn account to connect with other professionals, apply for jobs, and interact with recruiters or even customers, depending on their role. Marketing on LinkedIn is almost guaranteed to lead you to success. To begin, LinkedIn is the number one channel for business to business (B2B) for distributing their content. There are a whopping fifty-eight million company pages. I can see why this is the case. LinkedIn seems like a great place where everyone succeeds within their companies, whether jointly or independent. Another stat that could persuade one to LinkedIn is that ninety-two percent of B2B mark...

Who will win the Stanley Cup?

The Stanley Cup Playoffs begin tomorrow, Monday, April 17th. Sixteen NHL, National Hockey League, teams will fight and claw their way to hopefully be playing for and winning the Stanley Cup. The champions from last year, Colorado Avalanche, will be looking to repeat their recent success. They will begin the first round against the Seattle Kraken, who are playing in the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. It is so hard to say who is the favorite, as there are so many balanced and deserving teams in the running. The New York Islanders will be playing against the Carolina Hurricanes. Each has won the Stanley Cup before, with the Islanders winning four in a row from 1980-1983. The Hurricanes won their only one in 2006.  The Boston Bruins will be facing off versus the Florida Panthers. The Bruins won sixty-five games this year which is an all-time record. Their last championship was in 2011. The Panthers have never won a championship but have played in it once. The Minneso...

The Rundown of YouTube

YouTube is one of the most used platforms in the world. In class we even discussed the fact that it is the second largest search engine behind only Google, which says a lot. I really love it and use it everyday. It's a great platform because I can watch movies, documentaries, sports highlights from any sport and any era, news, and much more. YouTube has changed the game in many different aspects, much that I listed in the last sentence. You have the accessibility to search anything and more than likely a video of what you searched will pop up. Another thing that is seen on YouTube are the advertisements. It's good for the companies and businesses but everyone else can't stand them. I don't know if it's just me, but it feels like the ads have become more prevalent and longer. What used to be 10 or 20 seconds is now 30 or even a minute of ads before the actual video. Like I mentioned, this is most likely good for everyone else other than the viewer. The book states th...

The Master of The Masters

The most prestigious golf tournament took place over the weekend in Augusta, Georgia. This tournament, which is the Masters, is much like the Super Bowl or the World Series in the sense that whoever wins it definitely deserved to win it and also to be apart and play in it. The best golfers in the world battle the already tough course under sunny and dry conditions, but when the weather becomes bad, good golf becomes difficult for many. Jon Rahm played his best golf at the perfect time, which was Sunday, the final day of the tournament. You obviously need to play great from the time the tournament starts, which is Thursday, and be consistent everyday and every round if you want to have a shot at the green jacket and a nice payday on Sunday. Going into the final day, many believed Brooks Koepka would seal the deal. Others were picking Rahm due to his momentum. Kopeka started off great but declined as time went on. He had a two-shot lead over Rahm going into Sunday and like I said, many w...

Interested in Pinterest?

This week in class we are being introduced and discussing Pinterest. I really lack experience in the world of Pinterest, as it's never really been interesting to me. I've used it a little here and there but other than that I've completely forgotten  about its existence. Pinterest is a platform that hovers under the radar in the social media world but, nonetheless, is used widely by many. I say it's under the radar because of how much time it took for the platform itself to come up into society. Today, there are over 433 million monthly users with over 240 billion total pins. A statistic that blew my mind was the fact that the United States has almost twice as many Pinterest users as the second highest country, which is Brazil. There are, according to the book, almost 94 million users in the United States and just over 48 million in Brazil. Is it more surprising that our country has the most users overall or that second place has 40 million less users? Perhaps the latte...

Three wins, one sweep.

The 2023 Major League Baseball season began last Thursday. It is a fresh start for each of the 30 teams in the league. Those that did well last season are trying to repeat their success and then some, and teams that were not so hot finally get their chance to flip the script. Many of you know that I am from Texas, and this is important to this story because the Texas Rangers are my favorite baseball team. They are a great example, sadly, of a team that lines up with those that are impatiently waiting to get the nasty taste of last season out of their mouths. They opened up the season against the Philadelphia Phillies, who respectfully made it to the World Series last year. Despite getting off to a slow start, the Rangers found the column in game one. It was not pretty by any means, but a win is a win. Newly signed superstar pitcher, Jacob deGrom, failed to get far into the game and did not play his best game, allowing 6 runs in just under four innings of work. Texas exploded for n...
