Snap, Chat, Send.

Something that is well-known is that Snapchat is used heavily by a much younger audience. According to our textbook, the largest age group of users are those between the ages of 18 and 24. To be honest, I would argue that it seems to be younger than that. I can believe it though, because I know at least 98% of the people on this campus use Snapchat. I would bet on it. Another statistic is that a mere 1/5 of Snapchat users have a college degree. Clearly, this stat runs hand in hand with the largest age group. Since we all have Snapchat and use it each and every day, I'm sure we could explain the ins and outs of the platform from our first hand experience. I would say I use Snapchat more as a platform for primarily communication rather than finding my news. Although there are news, current events, and ways for me to be engaged with news, I just don't pay attention to it as much there. Although I use it for communication, I don't use it as much as I used to. If I need to get a...

The 2023 Social Media Workshop and Live Tweeting

Last Friday, we as students got to partake in the #ONUSMWorkshop23. Honestly, I do not know what my expectations were, or what they were supposed to be, but when the clock hit 4:00 pm, I felt grateful to have the chance to attend and listen to the people I listened to. For my live tweeting assignment, I attended the presentation by Dr. Phipps. First, I want to say I attended this for the sheer fact that he is one of my current professors and I think he is great. I am not in his podcasting class this semester, nor have I ever taken it, so I thought it would be cool to hear him talk about the subject. He started off by briefly touching on his past with owning multiple television and news stations. He then shifts to talk about the iHeart Radio podcast awards from 2022. Something I took away from this was seeing the many different categories of podcasts. You can literally start a podcast about anything. After this, Dr. Phipps discussed what it takes to become a successful podcaster. H...

The Twitter Algorithm

As we all know, an algorithm is similar to a set of rules that determines how and when we see content on social media. This can be based on who we follow, what we like and who we engage with, and what the specific platform thinks we would be interested in. Much of the same can be said and seen on Twitter. The algorithm on Twitter has been a bit different than the other platforms. Up until 2015, the algorithm on Twitter made your timeline actually show tweets in reverse-chronological order. How weird, right? But, as we know, it is has since changed. Every time you open Twitter, the platform essentially lays out what will you see by a list of things. This is just a broad overview into what goes into the algorithm, there is much more that goes into it. However, the first is how recent the tweet was posted. The second is how relevant the keywords are and how the relate to others. The third is engagement and how many likes, comments, and retweets the tweet has. If people aren't engagin...

Ready To Get It Over With

I don't know about you, but spring break felt like a summer tease. I was feeling super optimistic about nearly everything, the vibes were good, I was excited about being halfway through the semester, and then I came back to school. For the most part, I'd say I'm happy, but at this point, I'm just ready to get it over with. Deep in the back of my mind I can just feel that the remainder of the semester isn't going to be easy whatsoever. There are still midterms, and before I know it, it will be time for final exams. As I was walking to my classes today I was trying to motivate myself by thinking that no other day will be as hard as today. Coming back from break can be difficult and getting back into a groove can feel like it's impossible. I hope I'm not alone in saying that this week is a great week to get back into shape. With that being said, I hope everyone had a good spring break and enjoyed doing what makes you happy with people that make you happy. I fee...

Revisiting Chapter 1

Chapter one was a great introduction to the course. The key points we talked were the evolution of social media, social media as a marketing disruptor, the pros and cons of social media, metrics behind social media, social media marketing, the different types of media such as paid, earned, and owned, the skills gap with social media, and careers in social media marketing.  Right off the bat we were informed how social media has evolved so much and so fast. The book had a great stat which explained that it took 19 days for the app Pokemon Go to reach 50 million users. It took airlines 68 years! This really explains how much social media has impacted society today. Around 60% of the entire population uses the internet with more than five billion online regularly.  The chapter also talks about how much time people spend on social media per day, which is around seven hours. It has significantly altered the way people communicate with one another. Long gone are the days where...

My Spring Break Plans

The time has come for spring break. Starting on Friday, the campus will be nearly empty as mostly everyone will be scurrying out of here and going home or traveling. I hope everyone is excited to have a little bit of time off and, if you're leaving, be away for a while.  On Saturday the 11th I will be waking up around 3:30 a.m. and leaving around 4:00 a.m. to drive to my house in North East Texas which is about 14 hours from here. Although I dislike the drive, I know it will be worth it, as it has been every time before. So if my math is correct and all goes well behind the wheel, I should be home around 5 or 6:00 p.m. I know I will be worn out and distraught but being able to spend time with my mother and brothers will quickly make me forget about the way I feel as I will be overwhelmed with joy to see them. When it comes to the week of spring break, I have no idea what I will be doing on a day to day basis. I have a lot of family in Oklahoma so I can imagine myself going up...

My Weekend Away From Ada

This past weekend, I was excited to leave town for a few days. My girlfriend lives about an hour and a half from here and that is where I spent my time. The drive is never too exciting, especially during this time of year when there's no corn taking up a lot of space. Up, down, right, left, and curve after curve until, finally, we arrived to our destination. Being able to spend time with her and her family is always a fun thing to do. Her older sister graduated from here in 2020 and her younger sister plans on attending here after she graduates high school, so she always wants to know how life on campus is. We talked about our classes and how the semester has went by rather quickly. On Saturday, we went to London to eat with her parents. It is a local restaurant and never once has it failed to hit the spot. After this, we drove to Hilliard which is right outside of Columbus. We went shopping and enjoyed a really nice day. One of my favorite places to go is Meijer. In Texas, we did...

Tweet, Tweet, Tweet.

In chapter six we are going to learn the ins and outs of Twitter. This app was first introduced in 2006 by Jack Dorsey. His ultimate idea was coming up with and forming a platform where people could update others in around 140 characters. Today, according to the book, a whopping 465 million people actively use Twitter every month and more than half a billion tweets are shared each day. Marketing with Twitter can be seen as both similar and different to marketing with the other popular platforms. Compared to Facebook, Twitter users are around three times more likely to follow a brand. I wonder why this is? According to the book, Twitter is just a better opportunity for businesses looking to expand upon their platform when it comes to marketing. Twitter is a great place for marketing. Businesses are really involved and it is very easy for the users to come across a certain brand. This is key for a business as the consumer, or the user, can see their brand or product and potentially even ...
