The 2023 Social Media Workshop and Live Tweeting

Last Friday, we as students got to partake in the #ONUSMWorkshop23. Honestly, I do not know what my expectations were, or what they were supposed to be, but when the clock hit 4:00 pm, I felt grateful to have the chance to attend and listen to the people I listened to.

For my live tweeting assignment, I attended the presentation by Dr. Phipps. First, I want to say I attended this for the sheer fact that he is one of my current professors and I think he is great. I am not in his podcasting class this semester, nor have I ever taken it, so I thought it would be cool to hear him talk about the subject. He started off by briefly touching on his past with owning multiple television and news stations. He then shifts to talk about the iHeart Radio podcast awards from 2022. Something I took away from this was seeing the many different categories of podcasts. You can literally start a podcast about anything.

After this, Dr. Phipps discussed what it takes to become a successful podcaster. He asked the crowd what we think is the most important skill to have. No one said what the answer turned out to be which I found to be surprising. The most important skill to have for creating a podcast is passion. This made so much sense to me after hearing the fact. How is someone able to constantly pre-produce, produce, and post-produce a podcast again and again without having the passion to do it? Without having passion for it, you likely will not get far down the road. Phipps then mentioned this exact thing by informing us that many podcasters rarely make it to the third episode. A couple of things could lead to this such as burnout, low engagement, and even impatience.

Some of the most important things to consider when making a podcast have to do with why you ultimately want to start this podcast, your audience and who you want to reach, your topic, your podcast name and your platform. As Dr. Phipps mentioned, Spotify is a great platform for podcasting as they introduced "Spotify for Podcasters" earlier this month. As mentioned earlier, I did live tweet his presentation on my second twitter page, which my username for the account is: Cade_Higgins_56. Twitter page

I enjoyed taking part in the workshop and being engaged with the speakers. It was nice to hear many of the same things we have talked about and learned about so much in this class up to this point.

  1. Chase Coburn: Great insight into how Twitter uses advertisement. I think twitter is kinda sneaky when using ads because when I use twitter it just depends on the day when seeing ads.

Ready To Get It Over With

I don't know about you, but spring break felt like a summer tease. I was feeling super optimistic about nearly everything, the vibes were good, I was excited about being halfway through the semester, and then I came back to school. For the most part, I'd say I'm happy, but at this point, I'm just ready to get it over with. Deep in the back of my mind I can just feel that the remainder of the semester isn't going to be easy whatsoever. There are still midterms, and before I know it, it will be time for final exams. As I was walking to my classes today I was trying to motivate myself by thinking that no other day will be as hard as today. Coming back from break can be difficult and getting back into a groove can feel like it's impossible. I hope I'm not alone in saying that this week is a great week to get back into shape. With that being said, I hope everyone had a good spring break and enjoyed doing what makes you happy with people that make you happy. Tweet, Tweet, Tweet.

In chapter six we are going to learn the ins and outs of Twitter. This app was first introduced in 2006 by Jack Dorsey. His ultimate idea was coming up with and forming a platform where people could update others in around 140 characters. Today, according to the book, a whopping 465 million people actively use Twitter every month and more than half a billion tweets are shared each day. Marketing with Twitter can be seen as both similar and different to marketing with the other popular platforms. Compared to Facebook, Twitter users are around three times more likely to follow a brand. I wonder why this is? According to the book, Twitter is just a better opportunity for businesses looking to expand upon their platform when it comes to marketing. Twitter is a great place for marketing. Businesses are really involved and it is very easy for the users to come across a certain brand. This is key for a business as the consumer, or the user, can see their brand or product and potentially even ...

Benefits of Blogging

Hello everyone!      After reading chapter 12 a question comes to my mind.. If you could choose one form of blogging to have a career around which would it be? Blogging, vlogging, or podcasting? I have watched many vlogs on youtube and over the past couple of years people have started posting vlogs on TikTok and these vlogs are much shorter in time but still a good experience. I like to watch vlogs by people especially when they are travelling somewhere that I one day would like to go. Of course, the only difference between a vlog and a blog is that a vlog is a video so for some it may be more enjoyable to watch rather than to read the more traditional blog, but both are great nonetheless. Podcasts have rapidly come a long way and I appreciate them. Sports and true crime podcasts are my favorite and I prefer listening to them on a long roadtrip or while I am doing homework. If you enjoy listening to podcasts, which is your favorite? To be honest, I hav...
