A Story That is Dominating National Headlines

After much thought went into what to blog about, I found myself having a lightbulb moment. There is a story involving a man that I have heard nonstop everyday for about the last two months. This story has to do with Alex Murdaugh. If you don't know who he is, he is a former lawyer from South Carolina. He is a former lawyer because he lost his law license due to the fact he's currently on trial for the murder of his wife and son. It's currently not looking good for him in any way whatsoever. The Murdaugh family is well-known in the Low Country part of South Carolina, as Alex's great grandfather, grandfather, and father all served consecutively as a solicitor in the state's 14th District. This five county district soon was nicknamed "Murdaugh Country." The justice system in these parts was labeled by many as sketchy and rigged. They let certain things slide and took advantage of many things you shouldn't in that business. Specifically, Alex was a part of...

Instagram and the Algorithm

Instagram first hit the scene around 13 years ago in 2010. Like everything else, and especially in terms of technology, the platform has evolved and went through major changes. I remember when I was 14 years old in 2015 and first heard of Instagram through my friends. I honestly had no idea what the main idea was but my friends used it mainly because it was like Facebook and Twitter but better. When I got it for the first time, I agreed with my friends. It has always been a user-friendly platform and really simple to see the latest from who you follow. There have been some changes to the platform, however. In 2012, Facebook owner Mark Zuckerburg worked out a big deal to purchase Instagram. He bought the platform for around $1 billion! Over the last 13 years, the value of Instagram has increased significantly. According to Google, the social media platform is now valued at over $34 billion! With this purchase, however, came the changes. Some of the most important changes happened...

Thoughts on Super Bowl LVII

As the clock hit 0:00 and Jalen Hurts' attempt at a hail mary fell short, the Kansas City Chiefs were Super Bowl LVII (57) champions. As a whole, the 2022-2023 NFL season was one for the books. The same could be said about the Super Bowl itself.  The game started with an outstanding national anthem by country music star, Chris Stapleton. As soon as I saw the Eagles' head coach crying I knew it was going to be a meme for many years to come. With that being said, I truly understood his emotion. He's about to coach in the Super Bowl!  The game was remarkable. Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs quarterback, threw for 3 touchdowns and led Kansas City to their 2nd Super Bowl title in 4 years. Late in the 2nd quarter, he hurt his ankle and it appeared he was not going to be able to continue playing. He toughed it out, got some good pain medication, and put the team on his back. Anyone that watches football will tell you that he is definitely the best quarterback in the NFL. After winning ...

Why a Social Media Advertsing Strategy Will Lead You to Success

It is safe to say that when you set goals for yourself, whether big or small, you will likely try to not only meet these goals but try to overachieve them. In terms of social media advertising, these goals can be related to clicks, shares, likes, etc. According to the book, this is the first of seven steps for a social media advertising strategy that is guaranteed to lead you to success. Many similarities can be seen between a social media marketing strategy and a social media advertising strategy.     After you set your goals, you're going to want to select your target market. A question to ask yourself could be, "Who am I trying to reach?" This is especially important because you may be wanting to reach a new audience while also including your followers.      Following this, select the platforms that you want your ad to be deployed on. Your target audience has a huge role in where your ad will go. As the book states,...

My podcast with Hannah Brown

Last semester in Principles of PR we had the same assignment as we do now with the podcast. At that time I had no idea who would be a good guest for me to have but luckily Dr. Aggie hooked me up with an excellent person in Hannah Brown. She is a PR practitioner who works with pretty much exactly what we talk about in this class; social media and marketing along with PR too, of course. I enjoyed douing this podcast because I feel like I had more flexibility to dig deeper into social media and even she said there is a big difference from the PR side of things stricly to the social media side.  Considering that this podcast only had to be 5 minutes at the least, I came up with 5 questions for her. She expla...

Why Social Media Etiquette is as Important as Ever

As social media rapidly evolves, more and more possibilities are becoming a reality. Jobs have been created and have been in high demand, data is easier to find than ever, and connecting with a friend halfway across the world is just a simple click away. However, with the good comes the bad. And the bad can be pretty bad. One of the most important things you need to do to build your brand is to have good etiquette, which will give you a good reputation. 2020 was truly a year where pretty much everyone went through some kind of change. Society wasn't society at all because everyone was in their homes fearing the worst. You couldn't go out and do the fun things that we can do once again today. Social media, too, went through some really big changes. How did people connect with their jobs from home? Social media. How did teachers teach their students from home? Social media. How was Joe Burrow pronounced as the #1 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft? Social media. Webinars, live streams, z...

Using social media to retire from your job

Given that this is a social media class, I would like to talk about something that occurred today. Before I do so, I want to tie this in with Chapter 12 and how we are talking about blogs, vlogs, podcasts and webinars, which are ultimately all ways of communication and a way of spreading news on social media to people all around the world.  With that being said, NFL quarterback, Tom Brady, retired today from the NFL. Most people would most likely see this news and not care as much, mainly because he did the same thing at this very time last year. He announced his retirement but eventually came back to play this season. The most surprising thing to me, however, is that he uses social media to make this huge, life-altering decision. Brady used twitter to record and share a short video to the world that he was retiring, "for good this time."  This also makes me think about how social media is the place we find breaking news more than anywhere else. We use social media to fi...
