A Story That is Dominating National Headlines

After much thought went into what to blog about, I found myself having a lightbulb moment. There is a story involving a man that I have heard nonstop everyday for about the last two months. This story has to do with Alex Murdaugh. If you don't know who he is, he is a former lawyer from South Carolina. He is a former lawyer because he lost his law license due to the fact he's currently on trial for the murder of his wife and son. It's currently not looking good for him in any way whatsoever.

The Murdaugh family is well-known in the Low Country part of South Carolina, as Alex's great grandfather, grandfather, and father all served consecutively as a solicitor in the state's 14th District. This five county district soon was nicknamed "Murdaugh Country." The justice system in these parts was labeled by many as sketchy and rigged. They let certain things slide and took advantage of many things you shouldn't in that business. Specifically, Alex was a part of the family's private law firm and served part-time in the solicitor's office. According to the American Tort Reform Association, the 14th circuit district was in the top three of "judicial hellholes for defendants."

Since at least 2014, so many scary, suspicious and flat out wrong things have happened consistently with the Murdaugh family. In 2015, a young man named Stephen Smith was found laying in the middle of a road in Hampton County, deceased. This case has gone cold and been reopened but many people think Alex's son, Buster did this or at least had something to do with it.

In February of 2018, the housekeeper and lifelong friend of the Murdaugh's, Gloria Satterfield, passed away due to complications from a "fall" while at the Murdaugh's property in which caused her a severe head injury and ultimately death. Alex and two other attorneys put together a plan to steal over $4 million in the life insurance policy which was for Gloria's two sons. The scary thing about this case is that no coroner did an autopsy and her death was listed as "natural." Yeah, right.

Alex's other son, Paul, was the driver of a fatal boat crash that claimed the life of 19 year old Mallory Beach. Paul was severely drunk while driving and can be seen going to bars the night of. His blood alcohol content was over three times the legal limit. Paul wasn't handcuffed for this, wasn't given a field sobriety test until he went to the hospital, and the Judge denied a request of him wearing an alcohol monitor. At this point, the Murdaugh name is beginning to recieve the speculation it deserves.

Sadly, Paul and his mother, Maggie, were murdered on the night of June 7th, 2021. All fingers point to Alex. I won't go in to much detail but let's just say his defense is running out of ideas to actaully defend him in this trial.

Lastly, in September of 2021, three months after the murders of his wife and son, Alex attempted suicide. At first, he lied and said an unknown person shot him while he pulled over to change his tire. After coming a little bit clean and admitting it was all a setup, the man he blamed that shot him went to prison. It is believed that Alex did this so his surviving son, Buster, could receive millions of dollars in life insurance.

This is just a sliver of all of the madness revolving around Alex Murdaugh and the Murdaugh name. It is extremely sad that so many people have lost their lives and families have been unable to grieve in the right way. I really recommend, if you're interested, to watch the new Netflix series that came out today titled, "Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal." It really breaks each section down and shines light on the victims.

My podcast with Hannah Brown

Last semester in Principles of PR we had the same assignment as we do now with the podcast. At that time I had no idea who would be a good guest for me to have but luckily Dr. Aggie hooked me up with an excellent person in Hannah Brown. She is a PR practitioner who works with pretty much exactly what we talk about in this class; social media and marketing along with PR too, of course. I enjoyed douing this podcast because I feel like I had more flexibility to dig deeper into social media and even she said there is a big difference from the PR side of things stricly to the social media side.  Considering that this podcast only had to be 5 minutes at the least, I came up with 5 questions for her. She expla...

Ready To Get It Over With

I don't know about you, but spring break felt like a summer tease. I was feeling super optimistic about nearly everything, the vibes were good, I was excited about being halfway through the semester, and then I came back to school. For the most part, I'd say I'm happy, but at this point, I'm just ready to get it over with. Deep in the back of my mind I can just feel that the remainder of the semester isn't going to be easy whatsoever. There are still midterms, and before I know it, it will be time for final exams. As I was walking to my classes today I was trying to motivate myself by thinking that no other day will be as hard as today. Coming back from break can be difficult and getting back into a groove can feel like it's impossible. I hope I'm not alone in saying that this week is a great week to get back into shape. With that being said, I hope everyone had a good spring break and enjoyed doing what makes you happy with people that make you happy. Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner.

As many of the people that read and see my blogs know, I am a huge fan of sports. Football, basketball, baseball, hockey, you name it. Keeping up with and watching both college and professional sports has been my hobby for as long back as I can remember. However, I feel like I am a fan of a not so popular sport and that is NASCAR, which stands for the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing.  I have been a NASCAR fan for about fifteen years now. My favorite driver has been Denny Hamlin throughout this time. Denny drives the number eleven car and his sponsor has always been FedEx. Denny is both a team owner and a driver. He and Michael Jordan are team owners of 23XI racing, 23 for Jordan and XI for Hamlin as his number is eleven. Denny drives for Joe Gibbs Racing, a different team, and has driven for them for his entire career. There can be anywhere from 36 to 43 drivers each week fighting for the win. The odds of your favorite driver winning the race are already little ...
