For the first time in nineteen years, the Toronto Maple Leafs have successfully moved on from the first round. The Maple Leafs defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games in a best-of-seven game series. It was a drought that was among few of its kind in any American professional sport. Not making the playoffs is common, but making them and failing to get past the first round is quite rare.
The Maple Leafs didn't fail to worry those watching, however, as they won the first three out of four games and then lost game five. At this point, many thought they were going to fall back into their old ways and find yet another way to lose a series. They had lost a series while being up three games to one, so people didn't doubt that it could happen again.
I'm not a Maple Leafs fan but I am a fan, however, of feel good stories. Rooting for teams that are in droughts, new to the playoffs or underdogs in a series, in any sport, comes very easy to me. This series was entertaining from the time it was announced, as the back-to-back champs in 2020 and 2021 go up against a team that is just flat out cursed.
Nothing will get easier for Toronto in the second round, as they will be facing up against the Florida Panthers. The Panthers just beat the Boston Bruins in seven games. I would be confident in saying that no one, and I mean no one, predicted this to happen. Yes, anything can happen in the playoffs, but Boston was coming off the greatest regular season of all-time. Florida is a sneaky good team but I think Toronto will beat them in six games to move on once more.
After the first round of the playoffs, it's safe to say that still literally anything can happen. Toronto won a series and Boston lost to the Florida Panthers. Some may have picked one thing to happen but I guarantee none picked both to happen. Another huge surprise is the Seattle Kraken beating the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche. If you have yet to tune in, I recommend you do so as time goes on and the games become tighter.
Chase Coburn: I'm so happy for AM34. As a Coyote fan, I hope to see him do well. The low-key was a crazy winning goal. I would expect it easy to make that type of save, but hey, leaves move on. Go, Leafs, Go.
ReplyDeleteGreat post Cade! I don't watch much hokey but I am also very happy for the Maple Leafs! Best of luck to them!
ReplyDeleteHey Cade, you are absolutely correct I am not personally a Hockey fan but when I turn the Stanley cup playoffs on I am very well engaged. Teams that have been in droughts need limelight too!
