Instagram and the Algorithm

Instagram first hit the scene around 13 years ago in 2010. Like everything else, and especially in terms of technology, the platform has evolved and went through major changes. I remember when I was 14 years old in 2015 and first heard of Instagram through my friends. I honestly had no idea what the main idea was but my friends used it mainly because it was like Facebook and Twitter but better. When I got it for the first time, I agreed with my friends. It has always been a user-friendly platform and really simple to see the latest from who you follow.

There have been some changes to the platform, however. In 2012, Facebook owner Mark Zuckerburg worked out a big deal to purchase Instagram. He bought the platform for around $1 billion! Over the last 13 years, the value of Instagram has increased significantly. According to Google, the social media platform is now valued at over $34 billion! With this purchase, however, came the changes. Some of the most important changes happened around 2015 and 2016.

Prior to 2016, Instagram was a very timely and chronological social media app, much like Facebook. The algorithm was different than it is now. Since 2016, the app has become more of what Instagram thinks they want you to see. Much like TikTok uses their algorithm and how there is a "For You" page consisting of people you follow and who TikTok thinks you would like based on who you follow and what you like. Unfortunately for Instagram, this didn't work out the way they wanted it to. According to the book, "People were missing 70% of all the posts in their feed, including content from close connections." I really feel like this hurts the app because 70% is a huge number. Now more than ever I will get on Instagram and see posts from days ago that I have already interacted with. A feature that helps with this is to make sure to click Following instead of Favorites in the top left corner where the logo is.

This year, Instagram seems to be going all the way in with their "Reels" feature. These reels are much like TikTok videos and much like Facebook reels. It's not surprising seeing both Facebook and Instagram correlating in what they change and add to their platforms. I don't use or share reels on Instagram but I like the feature. It is a bit odd how every popular social media platform is becoming more and more like the others.

  1. Chase Coburn: I am seeing a lot of platforms copy each other as you said reels are starting to spread on Instagram but that was from TikTok, such as snapchat introducing the "BeReal" aspect to it's platform. Even TikTok used "BeReal" way for their platform. It seems once one platform creates something new and original then its soon to be copied.

My podcast with Hannah Brown

Last semester in Principles of PR we had the same assignment as we do now with the podcast. At that time I had no idea who would be a good guest for me to have but luckily Dr. Aggie hooked me up with an excellent person in Hannah Brown. She is a PR practitioner who works with pretty much exactly what we talk about in this class; social media and marketing along with PR too, of course. I enjoyed douing this podcast because I feel like I had more flexibility to dig deeper into social media and even she said there is a big difference from the PR side of things stricly to the social media side.  Considering that this podcast only had to be 5 minutes at the least, I came up with 5 questions for her. She expla...

Ready To Get It Over With

I don't know about you, but spring break felt like a summer tease. I was feeling super optimistic about nearly everything, the vibes were good, I was excited about being halfway through the semester, and then I came back to school. For the most part, I'd say I'm happy, but at this point, I'm just ready to get it over with. Deep in the back of my mind I can just feel that the remainder of the semester isn't going to be easy whatsoever. There are still midterms, and before I know it, it will be time for final exams. As I was walking to my classes today I was trying to motivate myself by thinking that no other day will be as hard as today. Coming back from break can be difficult and getting back into a groove can feel like it's impossible. I hope I'm not alone in saying that this week is a great week to get back into shape. With that being said, I hope everyone had a good spring break and enjoyed doing what makes you happy with people that make you happy. Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner.

As many of the people that read and see my blogs know, I am a huge fan of sports. Football, basketball, baseball, hockey, you name it. Keeping up with and watching both college and professional sports has been my hobby for as long back as I can remember. However, I feel like I am a fan of a not so popular sport and that is NASCAR, which stands for the National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing.  I have been a NASCAR fan for about fifteen years now. My favorite driver has been Denny Hamlin throughout this time. Denny drives the number eleven car and his sponsor has always been FedEx. Denny is both a team owner and a driver. He and Michael Jordan are team owners of 23XI racing, 23 for Jordan and XI for Hamlin as his number is eleven. Denny drives for Joe Gibbs Racing, a different team, and has driven for them for his entire career. There can be anywhere from 36 to 43 drivers each week fighting for the win. The odds of your favorite driver winning the race are already little ...
